Mekhalā is the girdle worn at the waist, and the same word for the band that circles a hill or the terrace of a stupa. It names a line that goes all the way round.

The Mekhala planters are built on that one idea: a horizontal band carried around a form. What changes from one object to the next is the band itself — its depth, its spacing, whether it lies flat against the body or steps away from it. The form beneath stays quiet so the band can be read.
